Why Do Women Seek Therapy?

Many women seek therapy due to concerns they have around how their mental health is being impacted. Most of these issues are related to stereotyping, assumptions, and women’s health to name a few. Some common reasons women seek therapy is for:

  • Depression.

  • Anxiety.

  • Postpartum depression.

  • Postpartum psychosis. Find a Therapist. Advanced Search.

  • Posttraumatic stress.

  • Eating disorders.

  • Borderline personality.

  • Mood-related challenges.

Depression or anxiety, are two of the main issues women experience which cause mental distress. They experience these at higher rates than men do in all age brackets.

Women may also be more likely than men to experience certain mental health concerns:

  • Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa are clinically reported at rates of 10 to 1.

  • Postpartum depression and psychosis are largely experienced by women, although men are increasingly reporting the experience of baby blues, or paternal postnatal depression.

  • In general, women are more likely than men to experience serious mental health concerns that impact daily function. This remains true across all age groups.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ISSUES

Women often take on roles of caretaker, giver, nurturer, professionals, and many other roles; sometimes all at one time. With this, women often face issues such as the following:

  • Sexism/Oppression: Prolonged cruel or unjust treatment. Being a minority, many women have experienced some form of oppression or sexism throughout history and even today. Stereotypes and discrimination has a prolonged negative impact on the development and welfare of women, often impacting their mental health. Underrepresentation, underpayment, arranged marriages are all forms of denying women basic rights.

  • Abuse/Intimate partner violence: Exploitation, often including violence - including intimate partner violence - can cause many mental health issues in women. These issues are unfortunately prominent in the lives of many women today. They can cause depression, posttraumatic stress, and anxiety among other issues. Women who have experienced this type of abuse experience higher rates of mental health issues and suicidality when compared to women who have not experienced this type of abuse .

  • Adverse portrayal in society and the media: One look in the media can create false beliefs or notions of what a woman thinks she should be, how she should act, or look. Several studies show that repeated exposure to the “ideal” thin-bodied woman has been known to lead to body image disturbance in women. What women wear and how they behave is often exacerbated by the media and society as a whole.

MOTHERHOOD

Motherhood: Motherhood is as complex as it is rewarding and many women may struggle with issues related to motherhood. Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and aging sometimes bring emotional challenges with them. Challenges also arise when women encounter problems with infertility, postpartum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and a range of concerns related to sex and sexuality.”
