What is a typical session like?
There is no universal description of a therapy session. You’ll be invited to have a special, unique type of conversation in which you can say exactly what you feel—total honesty—without worrying that you’re going to hurt someone’s feelings, damage a relationship, or be penalized in any way. You won’t be criticized, interrupted or judged as you speak. Your conversation will be kept in the strictest confidentiality.
How long are sessions?
Session length will depend upon what you and your therapist decide. However, sessions typically last 50-90 minutes and are based upon clinical necessity.
Will I be given homework after sessions?
Some therapists may give homework to complete after a session. This could range from reaching out for a first date to exercising three times a week. It may be to spend some time each day pounding a pillow to safely release pent-up emotions, make a nightly journal entry, or any number of “steps” and “challenges” relevant to your goals. During your next session, you might share your progress and address any areas where you got frustrated, stuck, or off-track.
Will I have to talk about my childhood?
Not necessarily. Many people have a misconception that therapy means digging up old skeletons from your childhood, or talking about how awful your father was. On the contrary, what you talk about during a therapy session is completely up to you. It will largely depend on your unique situation and goals. You will never be forced to talk about what you don’t feel comfortable talking about. Depending on your therapeutic goals, the focus of each session is as likely to be your present-day reality and the future that you wish to create.
